this is my letterboxd report for the world made straight directed by david burris.
this is the link to the report

i'll be honest i have no idea what's going on. i read the description on wiki, and that didn't help since this movie literally has nothing other than the book. then again, the summary for the book was vague but enthralling so it would get people to read or watch it.

i watched it because of noah wyle because my friend ellie got me into the pitt recently. in the pitt, there's this mousy little welsh man named gerran howell, and he plays an american doctor from the midwest, small, feeble, skinny, most likely malnourished, and very very caring for others who've suffered similar situations. noah wyle's character, dr robby, and gerran howell's character, dennis whitaker, seem to have taken the fanbase by storm. apparently, everyone thinks they're super cute together. it can be as shallow as a workplace crush or even a coworkers with benefits, or people have even made them out to have a deeper connection, something along the lines of hannibal and will graham from hannibal 2013 (or 2016... i can't remember because i didn't watch it. i was just really into the fandom), partially due to their differing religious views and headcannons about religious trauma. anyway, aside from that, gerran was in a film called freedom's path which has a similar-enough-looking setting at the world made straight. because of the similar settings, people like to look up twixtors, scenepacks, or take clips straight from the film to put together edits. one variety of edit in particular references a very small, not popular fanfiction known as someplace different, maybe texas, including whitaker and robby. the fic touches on topics of religioud trauma and guilt, doomed gay lovers, age gap romance, possible smut? i didn't read it, but it's in my bookmarks. last time i checked, the fic had less than 400 hits and around 100 kudos. the fic is unfinished. the setting of the fic takes place in an area that looks close enough to those two movies previously mentioned that people fix up their stories to form this one. i'm not complaining, since that's how i found this movie.

again, about the movie, i really don't know what's going on. i don't know why travis cares so much, or why anyone cares so much, about their kin and bloodline. i guess if i was smarter, i'd care too. or if i lived here, and had lived here for a long time. my family came here from vietnam, so i'd have no idea. everything i know about the movie is from description and later mentioning, things making more and more sense as i keep watching. i'm still really unsure about most of the movie. it's not a bad movie, but it makes me wonder about things, like the united states in the 80's and 90's, and even back in the civil war. i wonder about other things that i can't verbalize until i watch the movie again, but it's besides the point. i like noah wyle's performance, and i like his accent. he's not from the southeast, and he's actually from the west coast, but he did a pretty good job with the voice of his character. the way they talk makes me think about education, finance and its struggle, and things along those lines. it's not a bad movie, i just didn't understand it too well. not bad though
